Program Description: There are estimated to be seven million people worldwide with Irish ancestry. For many the biggest clue to their Irish connections comes from a surname in their family tree. But how can we tell if a surname is Irish and where do Irish surnames come from? This talk will examine some of the most common Irish surnames and their surprising origins, including those brought to Ireland from elsewhere. It will also provide suggestions on some of the best sources for researching your Irish surname history.

Speaker Bio: David Ryan is a genealogist and oral historian based in Cork. He has a Diploma in genealogy and a Masters in Medieval History from University College Cork. He is currently studying for a Masters in Public History and Cultural Heritage with the University of Limerick. David has worked as a professional genealogist for nearly a decade.
