Niagara County Genealogical Society, Lockport, NY

The Niagara County Genealogical Society, organized in January 1979 by a few dedicated people interested in seeking, preserving and sharing the information about this area’s people...past and present, is a non-profit educational group chartered by The New York State Board of Regents. We consistently average around 325 active members covering 41 states, Canada and England.

Niagara County Genealogical Society, Lockport, NY Our research library collection, on the second floor of the Niagara County Historical Society Museum, houses approximately 2000 books including, but not limited to, cemetery records, census records, genealogies, city directories, DAR books, maps and atlases as well as eleven drawers of rapidly-expanding vertical file material.

Although much of the library holdings do concern Niagara County, we also have material from many other New York counties, New England, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada. These are the areas from which our early settlers came, many of them subsequently moving on to Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and even further westward, but not without leaving footprints here in Niagara County.

The Niagara County Genealogical Library has no paid employees; an eager group of trained volunteers is on hand Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1-5 pm to assist you in your research. The library is free and open to all. The funding to continually add to the valuable holdings of the Library depends solely on membership dues and donations. Some of the privileges of membership are:

  • Newsletter: NCGS members will receive a quarterly publication. This 20-page publication contains genealogical material and records relating to Niagara County as well as Society news. Members may also post free queries in the newsletter.

  • Look-Up Program: NCGS has a Look-Up service available to members only. Each $15 membership in the Society entitles you to one FREE 30-minute Look-Up in the Library’s holdings OR one Obit Look-Up in the Niagara Falls or Lockport Public Library. After the free Look-Up, additional Look-Ups are available for $10 each and Obits for $6 each. (Click here for information about our Look-Up Program.)

  • Surname Exchange: NCGS has compiled a list of surnames being researched by members. We hope this will be useful to members in connecting with others who are working on the same surnames. It is available to members only for a nominal fee to cover the cost of printing andmailing. Members are also encouraged to place a lineage chart...of any size...on file in the Society Library. This will assure that work on your family is preserved for years to come.

  • Society Meetings are open to all and are generally held at 7 pm on the last Wednesday of each month (except July, August, November & December) at the Niagara County Historical Museum meeting room. Meeting topics are listed in the quarterly newsletters and have covered areas such as computers & genealogy, ethnic groups, local families and travel & research hints.

After over 25 years, The Niagara County Genealogical Society continues to be an active, growing organization, always welcoming new members. If you are interested in genealogy and preserving Niagara County’s rich heritage, please join us!
